Definitions of Canine Freestyle

From the Musical Dog Sport Association

The Musical Dog Sport Association defines Canine Freestyle as a dog sport in which training, teamwork, music and movement combine to create an artistic, choreographed performance highlighting the canine partner in a manner that celebrates the unique qualities of each individual dog. It is built upon the foundation of a positive working relationship of a dog and handler team.

From the World Canine Freestyle Organization

The object of musical freestyle is to display the dog and handler in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, artistry, costuming, athleticism, and style in interpreting the theme of the music. Routines should create a visually exciting display which is enjoyable to watch and which is equally enjoyable to dogs and handlers executing the programs.  Canine freestyle is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet.

From the Canine Freestyle Federation

Canine Freestyle is a choreographed performance organized with music, illustrating the training and joyful relationship of a dog and handler team. Freestyle is an excellent discipline to illustrate the conformation and movement of the dog. The reach, drive and beauty of an athletic, trained dog moving to music can take one’s breath away.

From Canadian-based Paws2Dance

Freestyle is a choreographed set of moves performed to music by dog and handler.  Divisions range from pre-novice, novice, intermediate, advanced and  masters.  Both the dog and handler share the spotlight and are judged equally.  The dog and handler may perform moves that are at any distance from each other.  The nice thing about doing freestyle is that, even while competing, you can talk and encourage your dog throughout the entire program.  This really helps relieve stress on the part of the dog and handler. The bond between handler and dog grows and most importantly it is enjoyable to both.
